[For Peter, the world seems suddenly much bigger after joining the fight between the Avengers in Berlin. He'd been starting out small with the superhero stuff, sticking to Queens and venturing out of his home borough only when duty called for it. He'd never even left New York before Tony Stark had come knocking on his door, bringing with him a chance to do some good on a wider scale. And, of course, there was the opportunity that came with knowing such an influential man.
Peter hadn't thought Tony was serious when he mentioned giving Spider-Man a much-needed upgrade—and such a thorough one, truly a hundred-point restoration. Even more surprising had been the fact that he was allowed to keep it when it was obviously expensive and far more advanced than anything Peter could make with his resources. And yet with all of that at his fingertips, and with the promise that Happy would be his point man, Peter feels suddenly thrust into this new chapter of his life. His calls and texts go unanswered, and while he understands that the Sokovia Accords mean that there are probably fewer missions that would allow a fifteen-year-old, he still feels a little lost. He tries to hold out, to not give in because it might make him look like a child running to adults for guidance, but after a couple months he caves.
Walking into Stark Tower is easier than expected, as is riding up the elevator that takes him past the public levels and to the private top floors. He clutches at the strap of his backpack with both hands as he stumbles out, spinning around several times as he takes it all in. Most noticeably is the fact that he's alone.]
Um... Hello? Mr. Stark? I-it's Peter. Parker! Peter Parker. [He winces at how stupid he sounds but steps further in
[ Tony experienced something like that himself, after the Battle of New York. He's mostly put those events behind him, as they were followed by other, more startling events, but he still has lingering issues concerning wormholes and being trapped in them. Those issues pale in comparison to other things, but all of it contributes to a nice, healthy dose of PTSD. Which he absolutely does not like to talk about to anyone.
It almost feels like a stroke of luck when the young man calling himself Spider-Man comes onto his radar. Taking him under his wing and passing on bits and pieces of his knowledge gives him purpose, and keeps him occupied. Oh, he likes to think there's more reasoning behind it than just that. He genuinely wants to help Peter grow and succeed, and what's more, he wants to keep the kid safe as much as possible. There's danger out there; that can't be avoided. But it's still possible to try and do some good in the world without worrying about getting killed every time one ventures out into the streets.
So, it's with that in mind that Tony extends an invitation to come to Stark Tower to get outfitted with some new tech. It's what he does. He creates upgrades for the rest of the Avengers, and Peter is an Avenger too. Age doesn't matter; heart and skill and determination do.
Age matters a little, because he's not going to send the youngest of their number out on a death mission, but Peter is still part of the team.
When Peter walks into his workspace, Tony's busy at work already. He almost misses the sound of the kid walking in, but he glances up out of habit just in time. ]
[He's still reeling a bit from being in Tony Stark's private penthouse, and even if it looks like there's a huge portion of it dedicated to a lab, it feels like being let in on a secret. It also feels completely unreal, like he might wake up in his tiny twin bed back in Queens any minute, and it adds purpose to his search for Tony. If he's going to wake up, he's going to make the most of this dream come true.
Peter's spider-sense tells him that Tony is just about to pop up from his workbench which is probably the only reason that he doesn't jump at the sudden appearance. He sounds happy to see Peter, which puts a smile on his face and eases from of the tension from his stance. Dropping a hand, it slides into the pocket of his jeans as he nods.]
Yeah, yes, of course! [He pauses for a moment, brow slowly pulling into a frown.] Um, what is "this" again? I know we can't really talk about everything on phones and all—security risk, or whatever—but you were a bit vague.
Yeah, well, I can put up all the security and firewalls and encryption you can think of, but there's always gonna be that one person out there who can break right through it.
[ He shrugs. He knows he's smart, but technology moves fast, and hackers move faster. It's an endless rat race. ]
Anyway, you're here now, so- First, you're getting an upgrade. New suit, new web slingy thing. I've been working on a little something for everyone, including you.
[Peter chuckles at that, nodding because he knows someone who could probably hack through all of that, and while Ned is one of the good guys, he's not naive enough to think that it means everyone else out there is, too. And even a misguided hacktivist could stumble across the wrong information.
He's just dropped his backpack to the floor when Tony mentions several upgrades, and he wishes that he still had the familiar weight of it on his shoulder to keep him anchored.] Wha-what? Mr. Stark, you just gave me upgrades, like, two months ago! And c'mon, you know that they're called web-shooters. [He pouts a little because it's not the most impressive name, but it's still his.] What do I need upgrades for? There's already stuff here I don't know how to use!
Okay, that's obviously true of most technology, b-but I didn't think supersuits were like cellphones. It's not like Apple is going to release a better version next year! [He pauses and then drops his voice to a conspiratorial whisper.] Are they?
[Biting back a smile, it drops when Tony questions him. He hadn't meant for it to sound like he didn't know what he was doing with the incredibly generous gift, and suddenly he's worried that it might be taken away if he's too honest.] Just that— I don't know, it's all so— The suit is great, Mr. Stark, it's really incredible! But I don't think you would make something this simple. It's got all the heads-up stuff but I can't figure out if there's function there, or it just looks cool. And when I fell off a building the other day I landed on something that changed the webshooters code and now there are all these combinations and it's freaking me out! Why do I need taser webs?
Oh, Apple would love to get a piece of this, but that's not going to happen. No, Apple might not release another version, but you know who will? Me. Supersuits have more in common with cellphones than you'd think.
[ There's no heat or grilling behind it. He just thought either his inventions were that straightforward or Peter would ask if he had a question. ]
See, that's the fun of it. You get these suits, they're yours, and you can push all the buttons and poke around as much as you want. And just between us, you never know when you might need taser webs. Or taser anything.
But fine, if you want me to tweak the settings, that's what I'm here for.
[Peter listens to the logic of it, nodding along slowly like he’s not entirely what the message is that he’s meant to be getting. He’s supposed to poke around as much as he wants, supposedly, and yet he can’t think of a way to do that which is totally legal.] Uh, so... you want me to hack the suit to figure it out? [When he says it aloud, it does sound like something that Tony would silently endorse—using ingenuity in order to solve a problem, even if it’s not entirely aligned with the rules.
He’s going to try to not consider the kind of situation he might get into that needs taser webs when he’s been doing fine with the default setting so far, the one that he’d made himself back before Spider-man got a billionaire sponsor.] Oh, really? I just want to know how to do it without breaking something. Or try to figure it out myself while you’re around so I can ask questions when I break it. [He grins, bouncing on the balls of his feet at the prospect of working somewhere in the same vicinity as Tony.] Also, when the hell are you going to tell me about the cool update specs?
